COKEVILLE – An afternoon game between the Pinedale High School Wranglers and the Cokeville Panthers on Sept. 27 found the Wranglers coming up short, 51-6.

An unyielding Pinedale defense shut out Cokeville in a scoreless first quarter as the Wrangler offense made gains.

“Coming in, we knew we had to play disciplined football and stay focused on assignments and we were able to do that throughout the first quarter,” assistant coach Mike Gregory wrote. “Although we were not able to put points on the board, the (Pinedale) offense was able to move the ball and the defense made key stops to keep the score at 0-0 at the end of the first.”

Cokeville took control of the scoreboard in the second quarter with four touchdowns to establish a 28-0 halftime lead.

“The second quarter saw the Wranglers blink first, leading to Cokeville scoring on a long pass play early,” Gregory said. “A handful of critical Pinedale errors kept the ball in Cokeville’s hands and they were able to capitalize.”

Cokeville continued to reach the end zone in the third quarter as the Wranglers battled to turn the tide.

“Although the (Pinedale) offense continued to have bright spots throughout the third quarter, Pinedale could not turn those positive plays into points.”

The Wrangler offense gained possession in the fourth quarter and launched a successful drive deep into Panther territory. Junior Cale Dauwen took the handoff from junior quarterback Ian Rigo and charged the remaining yards into the end zone to score a touchdown for Pinedale.

Dauwen set the pace for the Wrangler offense with 90 yards rushing over 17 carriers. Rigo completed five passes for 55 yards with junior Landon Fornstrom on the receiving end for 55 yards.

Defensively, junior Quincy Mika led with 17 points, including one sack. Dauwen tallied 16 defensive points with junior Porter Kemp earning 10.

The Wranglers host Mountain View on Friday, Oct. 4.

“The team is focusing on correcting the self-inflicted wounds that have cost the team in key situations,” Gregory wrote. “Turnovers have been our biggest challenge, so that is our priority heading into a matchup with No. 1-ranked Mountain View.
