Sublette swimmers trounce Rock Springs

BIG PINEY – The Sublette County combined girlsswim team opened Homecoming Week at Big Piney High School with a resounding 101-59 victory against Rock Springs in a dual on Thursday, September 26.

Relay teams set the momentum for the home team with Sublette County winning three out of three events.

Freshman Maggie Williams, senior Matazi Landers, junior Clairee Bingham and senior Moorea Moyes bagged gold in the 200-medley relay, posting a time of 2 minutes, 45.81 seconds. The team crossed the finish line more than 11 seconds ahead of Rock Springs.

Senior Maggie Walker, junior Kamia Runyan, freshman Mesa Landers and junior Libby Olson won the 200-freestyle relay with a time of 2:19.47. Sublette County reached the finish line with 1.55 seconds to spare over Rock Springs.

Clocking the 400-freestyle relay in at 5:13.15, sophomore Eva Scherbel, Williams, Olson and Runyan snagged first place in the event.

In individual events, Williams snapped up first place in both the 100-meter butterfly, timing in at 1:29.79 and the 400-freestyle at 5:49.81.

Senior Alexis Thompson garnered gold in the 100-meter freestyle, finishing with a time of 1:14.06.

Walker clinched first place in the 100-meter breaststroke, posting a time of 1:37.82.

Junior Shelby Scott won the 100-meter backstroke, crossing the finish line in 1:24.56.

Top five highlights

Four Sublette County athletes broke into the top five in the 200-freestyle. Olson led the pack with a second-place finish at 2:47.28. Thompson secured bronze in the event at 2:48.37, while Walker placed fourth at 2:48.49 and Runyan came in fifth at 2:51.97.

In the 50-freestyle, freshman Aylen Mills scooped up silver with a time of 35.05 seconds. Mesa Landers placed third in the event at 35.06 seconds with Moyes in fifth at 36.34 seconds.

Senior KaLee Bohnet took third place in the 100-meter butterfly, clocking in at 1:39.54.

Timing the 100-freestyle in at 1:15.37, Mills placed second in the event. Olson came in fourth place with a time of 1:15.59 while Scott finished fifth at 1:19.83.

Scherbel snagged silver in the 400-freestyle, clocking in at 6:08.38. Junior Aurora Rees secured third place in the event with a time of 6:17.59.

Three Sublette County swimmers broke into the top five in the 100-meter backstroke. Matazi Landers led in third place with a time of 1:36.65. Junior Evalyn Smith picked up fourth place at 1:41.14 with senior Chelsea Wright in fifth place at 1:46.58.

Runyan pulled into third place in the 100-meter breaststroke, posting a time of 1:48.62.

Smith and juniors Anna Wexels, Hadlee Francis and Kaylea Mortensen bagged bronze in the 200-medley relay with a time of 3:11.25.

Crossing the finish line for the 200-freestyle relay in 2:28.17, Bingham, Bohnet, Mills and Scherbel placed third in the event.

In the 400-freestyle, Mills, junior Bryn Arne, Bohnet and Matazi Landers came in third place at 5:23.86.

• 200-freestyle: Rees in sixth place at 2:55.22, Arne seventh at 3:06.95, Bohnet eighth at 3:08.59, Addison Kinnamon 10th at 3:15.74 and Smith 12th at 3:22.28.

• 50-freestyle: Mariaha Morgan in eighth place at 43.44 seconds.

• 100-freestyle: Matazi Landers in fifth place at 1:19.83, Mortensen eighth at 1:22.07, Bingham ninth at 1:22.59, Mesa Landers 10th at 1:22.81, Moyes 11th at 1:24.65, Wexels 13th at 1:27.38 and Francis 15th at 1:29.72.

• 100-backstroke: Francis in sixth place at 1:47.10, Kinnamon seventh at 1:49.76, Arne eighth at 1:53.80 and Wexels ninth at 1:56.14.
