Lady Punchers score Homecoming victories

BIG PINEY – The Big Piney High School Lady Punchers left it all on the court to successfully defend their gym in two games against conference rivals that capped off Homecoming Weekend with a bang.
On Friday, September 27, the Lady Punchers routed Wyoming Indian High School (WIHS) in a 3-0 sweep.
Saturday featured a conference match between Big Piney and Wind River. The match turned into a point-for-point, five-set battle with the Lady Punchers digging deep to secure a 3-2 victory against the Lady Cougars.
Wind River struck first in Saturday’s match to win the opening set, 25-18. Rallying in the second set, Big Piney turned the tables to defeat the Lady Cougars, 25-17.
Wind River won the second set, 25-17. The Lady Punchers fought back to triumph in the fourth set, 25-19.
It all came down to the winner-takes-all tiebreaker with Big Piney controlling the scoreboard throughout the fifth set to win, 15-6.
WIHS
The first set between Big Piney and WIHS proved close with WIHS establishing an early 12-10 lead. Kills by sophomore Jada Banks and senior Addison Losik tied the set at 12.
WIHS pulled back ahead, 15-13. The Lady Punchers answered with a pair of kills and a block by Losik and the set reached a 15-15 deadlock.
Junior Kaity Shreve aced a serve and Banks powered over a pair of kills to place Big Piney up, 20-15.
The Lady Punchers reached 22 with an ace by Banks. WIHS made a serving error and junior Kodee Greene followed up with a kill for 24. A block by Greene resulted in game point for Big Piney, 25-19.
The Lady Punchers took control of the scoreboard in the second set at three with a kill from Greene.
Big Piney went on an eight-point run, including kills by Greene, Losik and Banks, a block from Losik and an ace by junior Lizzy Brandt.
Shreve served up a pair of aces and Big Piney found itself up, 14-6.
Greene reached up for a block and spiked a kill. Junior Brylie Bailey responded to a point by WIHS with a kill. Two more kills by Greene widened the Lady Punchers’ lead, 21-15.
Banks scored game point with a kill, 25-20.
The lead switched back and forth early in the third set before Big Piney pulled ahead at five following a kill by sophomore Myka Wicks.
Shreve served up an ace and Banks, Bailey and Wicks each slammed over a kill, placing Big Piney ahead, 12-5.
Losik and Banks both scored a kill and Bailey aced a serve. Losik and Wicks blocked an attempt by WIHS to score. A kill by Wicks placed the Lady Punchers at a 22-11 advantage.
Greene reached up for a block, resulting in game point, 25-18.
The Lady Punchers host Pinedale for the cross-county rivalry match on Thursday, Oct. 3, followed by a home game against Mountain View on Saturday.
