Wranglers place fifth at State

CASPER – Wrangler wrestlers hit the mats for an intense, action-packed day of competition at the 2021 3A Wyoming High School Wrestling State Championships on Feb. 26. Pinedale took fifth place this year with 135 points in a field of 17 teams, two places higher than the Wranglers’ finish last year.

The State Championships featured contests bracketed by weight class rather than the duel format that dominated the regular season.

Three Wranglers powered their way to the final round in their brackets to earn the State Championship title and All-State honors – senior Keegan Gehlhausen, junior Colton Gehlhausen and junior Cody Phelps.

Keegan Gehlhausen took out Star Valley’s Brandon Beck by fall to advance to the quarterfinals in the 170-pound weight class where he challenged Buffalo’s Jace Skovgard. Following a three-period battle, Keegan Gehlhausen pulled out a win by technical fall (15-0).

In the semifinals, Keegan Gehlhausen pinned Skylar Jenkings of Newcastle and Upton 3 minutes, 6 seconds into the match.

The championship round pitted Keegan Gehlhausen against Riverton’s Tray Hyatt. The match turned into a bout that lasted into the third period. Keegan Gehlhausen pulled out an escape and two takedowns in the final period to win the match by a 9-3 decision.

In the 132-pound division, Colton Gehlhausen scored a win over Green River’s Jaxson Gomez by a 12-3 major decision. Moving into the quarterfinals, Colton Gehlhausen battled Ezra Archuleta of Rawlins and scored a 7-1 decision win.

Colton Gehlhausen fought Douglas’ Rylan Wehr through three periods in the semifinal match that Colton Gehlhausen won by a 13-2 major decision.

The championship round found Colton Gehlhausen on the mat against Conner Todd of Green River. In a three-period showdown, Colton Gehlhausen scored a takedown and a near fall in the final period to win the match by a 9-5 decision.

Phelps started the tournament pinning Riverton’s Rhett Stover in the first championship round. Advancing to the quarterfinals, Phelps pinned Aiden Coberly of Newcastle early in the second period.

Phelps wrestled Wheatland’s Keegan Meyer in the semifinals and pulled off a takedown in the third period to win by a 17-6 major decision. In the first-place match, Phelps defeated Tanner Collins of Mountain View by technical fall in the third period.

Senior Kaleb Bigelow came in third place in the 160-pound weight class. Bigelow pinned Kael Matthews of Douglas in the consolation semifinal. In the third-place match, Bigelow pinned Star Valley’s Joseph Thompson less than a minute into the first period.

Freshman Jake Hammer took fourth place in the 113-pound weight division. Hammer advanced to the third-place match after taking down Worland’s Kobe Swain by fall in the consolation semifinal.

Ethan Kemp, a sophomore, earned five points for the Wranglers with two wins in the 126-pound consolation rounds. Junior Tristan Haley scored four points following a pair of wins in the consolation rounds for the 120-pound division.

Senior Taylor Richey (145 pounds) and sophomore Ian Cantu (195 pounds) both added three points to the tally with victories in the first consolation round.

Sophomore Tucker Kelly and freshman Dustin Larsen also qualified for State and competed in the preliminary rounds.
