CASPER – The Big Piney High School track team cruised past the competition at both the state championships in Casper from May 16-18 and at the 2A West regional meet in Shoshoni on May 10-11, filling its bag to capacity with 3A All-State and All-Conference honors.
The Wyoming Coaches Association awards All-State recognition to the top two individual placers and the top relay team at state. The top-two finishers in individual events and the first-place relay team at regionals secure All-Conference accolades.
All-State
A trio of Big Piney runners snagged All-State honors in sprints, mid-distance and distance events at the state championships.
Junior Micah Strong garnered three All-State awards. Clocking the 400-meter finals in at 59.17 seconds, Strong captured gold in the event.
In the 800-meters, Strong struck gold with a time of 2 minutes, 21.28 seconds. Rounding out postseason awards, Strong scooped up All-State recognition with a second-place finish in the 100-meter finals at 13.08 seconds.
Junior Jolynn Jones clinched All-State accolades in both the 800- and 1600-meters. Jones pulled into first place in the 1600-meters, timing in at 5:36.39.
Crossing the finish line for the 800-meters at 2:21.70, Jones earned second place in the event.
Distance runner and junior Emma York also achieved All-State awards in two events. York bagged gold in the 3200-meters on Thursday, posting a time of 12:32.89.
In the 1600-meters, York pulled into second place with a time of 5:36.43.
All-Conference girls
Strong snapped up the regional championship and 3A West All-Conference honors in three events at Shoshoni.
Opening the meet with a bang, Strong won the 800-meters with a time of 2:21.06. The junior went on to strike gold in both the 400-meter finals, posting a time of 59.57 seconds and the 100-meter finals at 13.00 seconds.
Jones won the 1600-meters and an All-Conference award in the 1600-meters, timing in at 5:39.01. In the 800-meters, Jones clinched silver and netted her second All-Conference honor with a time of 2:22.54.
York garnered All-Conference honors in two events. Timing the 3200-meters in at 12:41.21, York secured first place before finishing second in the 1600-meters at 5:39.56.
Senior Julia Hymas bagged All-Conference honors in the pole vault, advancing to second place on the leaderboard with a leap of 9 feet.
All-Conference boys
Junior Kelby Staley captured three All-Conference awards in Shoshoni. Staley won the finals for the 300-meter hurdles, timing in at 43.96 seconds.
Staley went on to place second in both the 110-hurdles finals, posting a time of 17.37 seconds and the 400-meter finals at 52.77 seconds.
Senior Karsyn Gurr snagged All-Conference honors in two sprinting events. Clocking the 200-meter finals in at 24.21 seconds, Gurr struck gold in the event. In the 100-meter finals, Gurr finished second with a time of 11.93 seconds.
Junior Caden Clifford picked up All-Conference accolades and the regional title in the 100-meter finals at 11.87 seconds.
Fellow junior Dominic Sanchez won the long jump to garner All-Conference recognition, hitting a mark of 17 feet, 10 ¼ inches.
In the pole vault, sophomore Nate Brown scooped up All-Conference honors and the regional championship with a mark of 9-09.
Sophomore Zef Zuniga achieved an All-Conference award for a second-place finish in the discus, clearing 120-02.
The boys’ 4x100-relay team rounded out All-Conference recognition. Caden Clifford, Gurr, freshman Zavier Clifford and Sanchez struck gold in the event with a time of 45.68 seconds.
