WESTERN WYOMING – The Wyoming high school golf season passed the midway mark with the annual two-day Snake River Shootout hosted by Jackson Hole and Star Valley high schools.
The Pinedale High School golf team teed off against its rivals from across the region in the shadow of the majestic Teton Mountain Range on the first day at Teton Pines Golf Course. Teams then traveled to Cedar Creek Golf Course in Star Valley Ranch for more action on day two.
The Wrangler varsity boys earned fifth place overall, posting a two-day total of 694 strokes. Fielding a single athlete in girls’ varsity, the Lady Wranglers did not place as a team.
Junior Elyn Bowers snagged a spot in the top 10 in girls’ varsity, finishing in ninth place following two days of competition with a combined total of 202. Bowers shot consistently both days, at 100 and 102, respectively.
In boys’ varsity, freshman Braxton Costello secured 10th place, tallying 164 strokes over the course of two days. Costello also played a consistent game, totaling 82 at both golf courses.
“I thought we played well on two tough courses at the Snake River Shootout,” said Head Coach Luke Myszewski. “Our team didn’t place as high as we did in Evanston, but our kids were tenacious. They each had a few moments where they could have let their rounds spiral out of control, but every player managed to keep a level head and bounce back. I am happy with how we have steadily improved since the beginning of the season.”
Senior Brody Hamby came close to the top 10 in boys’ varsity with a combined total of 166 – posting solid 83s on both days of competition.
Sophomore Dune Mecartney tallied 183, improving significantly from 99 at Teton Pines to 84 at Cedar Creek.
Fellow sophomore Decker Normington shot 184 following two days – 91 on day one and 93 on day two.
Senior Owen McMillen posted a two-day score of 189, moving up on the leaderboard from 98 on day one to 91 the second day.
Junior Alex Gosar posted a combined 206 (106-104), with sophomore Grant Carter at 212 (108-104) and freshman Matthew Gosar with 217 (114-103).
Pinedale hosts its annual golf invitational at Rendezvous Pines Golf Course on both Thursday, Aug. 31, and Friday, Sept. 1. Tee times are at 11 a.m. each day.
