The Rawlins Pentathlon on Saturday required athletes to complete five events – the 100-butterfly, 100-backstroke, 50-freestyle, 100-breaststroke and 100-freestyle – to place.

The three-day event, running from Dec. 8-10, pitted Pinedale against 3A Conference rivals Rawlins and Powell and 4A opponent Riverton.

Pinedale’s team is young this year, with 12 freshmen and three sophomores.

Pinedale beat the defending 3A West Conference Champion, Powell, 58-55. The Wrangler sideline erupted. Pinedale’s starting lineup had just overcome a significant hurdle and found redemption after falling to the Panthers the previous two seasons.

The Lady Wranglers blazed a trail at the Evanston Invitational on Friday, Dec. 9, winning gold in their first competition as a team, tallying 69 points across nine brackets. The boys’ team beat nine schools from Wyoming and Utah to earn second place with 151 points.

The wave of interest in girls wrestling is “significant” because the sport offers a wide range of benefits, Horrocks said. “Girls’ wrestling will instill in female athletes confidence, mental toughness, self esteem, grit, self reliance and discipline,” he added. “It encourages physical fitness, builds character, teaches highschoolers how to overcome obstacles, handle their emotions, respect authority and the importance of being a good teammate. Ultimately, wrestling teaches that success has to be earned through hard work and success.”

Approaching 76, Thompson said as a member of the AQHA national board of directors, he’d long thought about making his way to this huge show but never really had time – until he made it.

“Our Last Chance Meet was one of the most joyful meets I have been to in my 30-plus years of competitive swimming and coaching,” said Co-Head Coach Kelsey Harder. “The amount of laughter and celebration over every aspect of the meet is one that I will always remember. It was encouraging to hear the freshmen, sophomores and junior girls already planning how they are going to prepare for next season by training in the offseason. Sending our seniors off to State in the manner we were able to is absolute perfection. I’m so excited for what this season has been and what is to come.”

Pinedale and Cheyenne battled to a 3-3 draw on Saturday evening. Sunday’s game remained close with Cheyenne pulling ahead by a single goal to score the win, 6-5.
