SCSO urges caution amid summer traffic

SUBLETTE COUNTY — With the arrival of summer and the increased enjoyment of outdoor activities, the Sublette County Sheriffs Office (SCSO) urges citizens to remain vigilant and prioritize safety amidst heightened pedestrian and vehicular activity.

As sidewalks and main streets bustle with pedestrians and children enjoying their bikes and e-bikes, it is crucial to recognize potential hazards. Sidewalks are designated for pedestrians, and the presence of cyclists navigating through pedestrian traffic can pose risks of collisions and accidents.

The SCSO has recently received reports of concern regarding children riding bikes and e-bikes too quickly or having near misses with pedestrians. In response, we emphasize the importance of parents engaging in conversations with their children about sidewalk etiquette and crosswalk safety. Encouraging children to be respectful while using sidewalks, yielding to pedestrians and exercising caution significantly contributes to a safer environment for all.

Furthermore, as crosswalks become focal points for increased pedestrian crossings in town and heightened vehicle traffic, it is imperative for both drivers and pedestrians to exercise caution and adhere to traffic laws.

Drivers must yield to pedestrians at crosswalks, while pedestrians are encouraged to utilize designated crossings for their safety. Drivers should remain attentive to foot traffic that may suddenly step or cross into traffic and be prepared to stop promptly.

The SCSO recognizes and emphasizes the importance of collective responsibility in ensuring public safety. By staying alert, respecting pedestrian rights-of-way, and adhering to traffic regulations, we can mitigate risks and foster a safer summer for all community members.
