Russell David Stone, 69, of Boulder, Wyo., passed away at his home on May 12, after a valiant battle with cancer. Russell was born on December 16, 1955, in Hobbs, New Mexico to Richard Cyril and Mary (Daniel) Stone. Russell’s father, the Reverend Dr. Richard Stone, was a Methodist Pastor and the church moved the family to different locations throughout New Mexico and West Texas while Russell was growing up. He graduated from Highland High School in Albuquerque, New Mexico. After high school, he earned his bachelor of science degree in environmental safety and health and then went on to earn his master of science degree in industrial safety management.

He married the love of his life, Sheryl Avaritt on March 2, 1986, in Georgetown, Texas, and together they made their home in Los Alamos, New Mexico. Russell was on the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) and was the New Mexico Chapter President of the American Industrial Hygiene Association of the Los Alamos National Laboratory (AIHA) from May 2004 through May 2022. He was a mentor to many of the young people who went into the field of environmental health and safety and he was always proud of the friends he made and the work he did throughout his career.

Russell was raised and educated in the Christian faith. He was taught to know the Lord God and to follow Jesus Christ all his life. His hobbies included archery, hiking, softball refereeing, and fly fishing, and he was an avid fan of the Dallas Cowboys.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years Sheryl Stone; his siblings Jeanne Bridges, Ann Harkins, Frances Bains, Rick Stone, Robert Stone, and Sally Sneed. He is preceded in death by his parents Richard and Mary Stone.
Russell was laid to rest on Thursday, May 15 in the Boulder, Wyoming Cemetery.
