Wranglers pick up the pace after delayed start to season

GREEN RIVER – With only one meet under their belt since the start of the season, the Pinedale High School track and field team was more than ready to compete in a pair of meets in Afton and Green River last Thursday and Friday.

The team hit the road on Thursday early in the morning to compete at the Dave Draney Invitational in Afton, where they competed against Star Valley, Jackson, Mountain View, Lyman, Kemmerer, Cokeville and Farson-Eden. The girls team had a solid meet, taking fifth overall with 68 points, while the boys team took sixth with 35 points.

On the girls side, senior Shantelle Rule had a strong day, taking third overall in the 100-meter dash after completing the event with a time of 13.28 seconds. Rule went on to finish first in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.77 seconds later in the day, and finished second in the high jump with a height of 5 feet, 1 inch.

In the 4x100 relay race, Pinedale’s team of runners consisting of freshman Anna Harber, sophomore Madison Friend, freshman Adriana Liserio and freshman Maggie Majhanovich took fourth with a time of 55.94 seconds.

In pole vault, Friend took sixth overall with a height of 7 feet, 6 inches, while teammate Harber earned third overall in the long jump with a distance of 15 feet, 6 inches.

In the triple jump, Friend took first overall with a distance of 33 feet, 7 inches, while Harber took second overall after finishing 1 inch behind Friend. Majhanovich finished closely behind with a distance of 31 feet, 2 inches.

In throwing events, junior Hannah Mivshek had a solid day, finishing seventh in the shot put with her best throw soaring 28 feet even, along with seventh in the discus after throwing 89 feet, 3 inches in the finals.

On the boys’ side, senior Zack Winer took fourth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.67 seconds. Later in the meet, junior Jackson Snell had a strong, consistent race in the 3,200-meter distance run, finishing second with a time of 11:29.67.

In the 300-meter hurdles, junior Kade Winters was able to earn sixth place overall after crossing the finish line with a time of 46.40 seconds.

In the high jump, sophomore Anival Ramos took sixth overall with a final jump of 5 feet. Winer then took second in the triple jump with a distance of 41 feet, 9 inches.

In throwing events, senior Sergio Saenz took seventh overall after throwing 107 feet, 1 inch in the finals, while senior teammate Kyle Brewer took eighth with a throw of 106 feet, 6 inches in the finals.

The team turned right around the following day to attend the Green River Invitational on Friday. The girls team earned fifth place overall with 56 points, while the boys picked up 11 points to finish 10th overall.

On the girls’ side, Rule had yet another strong showing in the 100-meter dash, finishing third overall with a time of 13.33 seconds. Rule went on to dominate the 200-meter dash, picking up second place after crossing the line in 28.68 seconds.

The team then picked up some points in the 4x100 relay race, as a team consisting of Friend, Liserio, Harber and Majhanovich put together a quick race time of 55.45 seconds.

In the high jump, Liserio placed fourth overall with a height of 4 feet, 5 inches, while Harber went on to secure a fifth-place finish in the long jump after achieving a distance of 16 feet, 1 inch.

The team was able to pick up a good amount of points in the triple jump after Rule took second overall, with Liserio taking fourth, Harber finishing fifth, Friend taking sixth and Majhanovich earning seventh overall.

On the boys side, distance events went well for the team, with senior Nathan Stewart finishing fourth in the 1,600-meter distance race with a time of 5:11.33, with Snell finishing just behind in fifth place with a time of 5:14.65. Later in shot put competition, Saenz had another strong showing, finishing seventh overall with a throw soaring 38 feet, 11 inches.

Pinedale’s next meet is a special one, as it is the team’s only home meet of the season and takes place next Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Sunny Korfanta Field in Pinedale.
