LYMAN – Taking on the No. 1 seed in the 2A West Conference is no simple task, and the Lyman Eagles threw plenty of punches during the Oct. 14 match against the Wranglers.

The Lyman offense controlled the gridiron in the first half, scoring a sequence of touchdowns and establishing a commanding 52-point lead by halftime.

The Wranglers refused to give up under the relentless pressure and rallied in the second half, scoring a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

The game opened with Lyman scoring three touchdowns in the first quarter.

The Wranglers gained yards following Lyman’s third touchdown. Junior Holden Saxton returned Lyman’s kickoff deep in Wrangler territory, broke a tackle and ran to Pinedale’s 33-yard line. Senior quarterback Konner Ziegler completed a pass to junior Luke Gray for a Wrangler first down.

Junior Ethan Jensen sprinted over midfield before the Wranglers lost possession.

The Eagles scored again on the ensuing drive.

Pinedale returned the kickoff at its own 24-yard line. Ethan Jensen tucked the ball and charged down the field to the 36-yard line for a first down.

Ziegler, unable to find an opening to pass on the next play, scrambled, dodged the Lyman defense and raced up to the 45-yard line, inches shy of a first down. Ziegler gained enough yards on the following play for a Wrangler first down.

The second quarter began with Pinedale in possession. Sophomore Dustin Larsen caught a pass inside Eagle territory.

The Lyman offense scored three more touchdowns in the second quarter.

The Wranglers shut down the Eagles’ final drive in the first half, including tackles led by Saxton, Ethan Jensen and sophomore Cordelle Lane.

Lyman scored its final touchdown in the third quarter, although a beefed-up Wrangler defense made the Eagles fight for each yard. Ethan Jensen pulled off two tackles, one resulting in a loss. Sophomore Bodie Jensen took down the Eagles’ runner with a pair of tackles. Larsen and senior Tim Hosler also swept in for tackles.

Lyman eventually reached the end zone. A wall of Wrangler defenders shut down the Eagles’ attempt to add 2 extra points to the tally.

Ziegler returned the Eagles’ kickoff to Pinedale’s 32-yard line. Ethan Jensen charged up the right to the 40-yard line.

The Wranglers continued their drive into the fourth quarter. Ethan Jensen plowed through the Lyman defense and raced over midfield for a first down. Bodie Jensen chewed up yards on the next play.

Ethan Jensen put his head down and charged up the middle to the 38-yard line. On the following play, he pushed the line of scrimmage forward for a first down. Jensen continued to drive forward, reaching the Eagles’ 10-yard line.

Gray completed a pass from Ziegler and raced the remaining yards into the end zone, putting up 6 points on the scoreboard for the Wranglers.

Pinedale shut down Lyman’s final drive with tackles by Larsen, Bodie Jensen and seniors Bryton Nelson and Tyler Kothe.

The Wranglers play Thermopolis for an away game on Friday, Oct. 22. Head Coach Clay Cundall hopes Pinedale can take the lessons learned from Lyman and achieve success against the Bobcats.

“Looking ahead to Thermopolis, we’ll see a tough opponent,” he said. “We need to play our best football so we can send out our seniors on a high note.”
