WYOMING – Big Piney’s Mack Rawhouser will be honored during Chadron State College’s Homecoming Week with the Distinguished Alumni Award for his noteworthy career as an educator, coach, civic leader and community volunteer, the college announced.
Rawhouser originally enrolled at Chadron State in 1967 but left a year later to join the U.S. Army and serve in Vietnam. He was honorably discharged in 1970, returned to Chadron State and graduated in 1975 with a degree in industrial technology education.
He and his wife, Ruth, were honored as Mr. and Mrs. CSC in 1975.
Following a year of teaching in Hay Springs, Neb., he was hired as industrial arts teacher, assistant football coach and boys’ basketball coach at Big Piney. Throughout his 31 years he was named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Boys Basketball Coach of the Year from 1982 to 1985, then again in 1987 and 1988. He was also chosen as assistant coach for the first North-South All-Star Basketball Game in 1984 and was selected as Wyoming Coaches Association Coach of the Year in 2A boys’ basketball in 1987.
He then became girls’ basketball coach for Big Piney and was named Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Girls’ Basketball Coach of the Year for five consecutive years from 1992 to 1996. In 1992 he was selected as co-head coach in the North-South All-Star Basketball Game and was named Wyoming Coaches Association Coach of the Year.
Rawhouser also served as a representative for the Wyoming High School Activities Association Board of Directors for 2A basketball. He served as chairman of the Sublette County Recreation Board and was vice chair for Region 5 Board of Cooperative Educational Service for southwest Wyoming for six years.
He continued to advocate for athletics in Wyoming even after his retirement in 2007. In addition to his time on the WHSAA and Sublette County school boards, he was chosen by voters to become a commissioner.
Rawhouser was presented with the Wyoming Coaches Hall of Fame Distinguished Service Award in 2011. He was inducted into the Big Piney High School Athletic Hall of Fame two years later. He’s served as Western Sublette District No. 9 Board of Cooperative Educational Services Director and an outreach coordinator for Western Wyoming Community College. Of course, he currently serves as commander of American Legion Post 78 in Big Piney.
