Pinedale football rushes past Kemmerer

KEMMERER — The Pinedale football team ran the ball hard and made big stops on defense to score a 20-0 win against Kemmerer last Friday.

Kemmerer moved the ball well on its opening possession, but a sack on third-and-one at Pinedale's 35-yard line forced the Rangers to punt.

Pinedale responded with steady rushing attack from Tyler VanEtten and Josef McCulloch. Big runs by both backs helped Pinedale march down the field and McCulloch capped off the drive by catching a touchdown pass from Wyatt Phelps.

Kemmerer moved the ball into Pinedale's territory again on its second drive, but the Wranglers once again stepped up to shut the drive down and force a punt.

On Pinedale's second drive of the game, VanEtten broke some tackles on his way to a 33-yard touchdown run that put Pinedale up, 14-0, in the second quarter.

"We had two impressive drives in the first half," Pinedale head coach Mitch Espeland said. "Our line did a nice job controlling the line of scrimmage. Both running backs ran hard and got scores for us with the help of our five linemen. The team set the pace and kept this momentum up on defense."

Pinedale got the ball to start the second half. After getting into Ranger territory, Pinedale chose to go for it on fourth-and-inches. VanEtten got about 13 more yards than he needed for the first down, and on the next play, Phelps connected with McCulloch on a 26-yard touchdown pass.

"Phelps was aided by a tremendous block from Senddey Gutierrez," Espeland said. "This gave us a 20-0 lead and allowed our defense to continue its aggressive play."

Kemmerer kept moving the ball and came close to scoring late in the game. Facing a fourth-and-goal, however, Carson Stinson made a tackle on an end around to force the turnover on downs. Stinson then came up with a sack on another fourth-down play on Kemmerer's last drive of the game.

VanEtten leads the team with 275 rushing yards, an average of 91.7 yards per game.

McCulloch only has 132 rushing yards, but is averaging 8.3 yards per carry. He also leads the team with four touchdowns.

VanEtten, McClulloch, Porter Potts, Stinson, Sammy White, Ethan Carson and Raven Que lead the Wranglers in tackles.

With the win against 2A West Conference foe, Kemmerer, Pinedale is tied with Mountain View for first at 2-0 in the conference and 2-1 overall. The top four teams from the conference will make the state playoffs.

Kemmerer slipped to 1-2.

At 7 p.m. tonight, Pinedale will host Greybull.
