Wyoming Freedom Caucus denies thousands of children access to essential summer food assistance

Dear Editor,

I am appalled and deeply disappointed by the Wyoming Freedom Caucus and the state legislators who voted against House Bill 341, denying thousands of Wyomings children access to essential summer food assistance.

In a state where rural communities already face challenges related to food security, rejecting federal aid meant to help feed our most vulnerable citizens is nothing short of irresponsible governance.

The Freedom Caucus has often positioned itself as a defender of Wyoming values, but what value is greater than ensuring that no child goes hungry? Their argument that accepting federal funds increases dependence on government programs is both shortsighted and cruel. This funding was not a handout — certainly not compared to the massive amount of federal dollars pouring into the state for agricultural subsidies, about $17 million per year, and the grazing allotments handed to the ranching community at just 6% of fair market value — something with which the Freedom Caucus seems to have no problem.

This funding was an investment in Wyoming. Schools and families across the state would have benefited from these resources, reducing strain on already struggling households. In a state where 20% of children face food insecurity, these legislators have chosen to play political games with health and development. Hunger does not take a summer vacation, and for many families, school meal programs are the only reliable source of nutrition their children receive.

By refusing these federal dollars, our lawmakers have turned their backs on the very people they were elected to serve. Where are the conservative Christians who rally against abortion when it comes to providing nutrition for children in need? If they claim to be pro-life, shouldnt that commitment extend beyond birth?

Wyoming prides itself on community and resilience, but we also pride ourselves on helping our neighbors. This decision by the Freedom Caucus and its allies is not something of which to be proud.
