CODY — It was only a matter of seconds before the gloves, sticks and helmets would go flying into the air as the Pinedale Glaciers defeated Jackson 5-2 to take home the Wyoming State High School B Championship trophy.
Lead by a high-powered offense and a stingy defense the Glaciers started the tournament against the Laramie Outlaws defeating the Outlaws 12-1. With Aringtyn Huffman between the pipes the Pinedale squad played with confidence, amassing 74 shots on the opposing team’s goalie while only giving up 20 shots against. It was a great start to the tournament for the team wearing their traditional green jerseys, but they knew the job was not done.
Next on the schedule was a hard-hitting team from the other side of the mountains, the Fremont County Freeze. The game started fast and physical, but Pinedale was ready. Dace Rhea was able to find the back of the net in the 1st period to give Pinedale the lead going into the 2nd. Pinedale added 2 more goals, one scored again by Dace Rhea and the second by Bo Danze. As the puck dropped to start the third period the score was 3-0 with Pinedale only 18 minutes away from moving on to the championship game. The Pinedale team dressed in their red jerseys started to showcase their speed, Dace Rhea was not going to be stopped as he lit the lamp for his hat trick, and more goals would follow as Tyler Currah and Edwin Vega joined in on the fun adding 2 more goals. Tending net for the Glaciers was Tyson Ramirez who put up a brick wall to shutout out the Freeze 7-0. The Pinedale Glaciers would move on to the championship game Sunday morning against the Jackson Moose.
Riley Arena in Cody was buzzing. As both teams took to the ice the crowed cheered, horns blew in anticipation of what lay ahead. The Pinedale team with a 19-1 regular season record would take on their neighbors to the north, Jackson for the chance to be state champions. Pinedale started fast, moving the puck up the ice at will with plenty of scoring chances but the Jackson goalie was up to the task stopping 27 shots but on the 28th Rhea broke the seal to put Pinedale ahead with only seconds left to end the first period. The second would be a hard-fought period with either team willing to lay down and surrender the title without a fight. The Moose would tie the game at 1-1 but Pinedale responded 4 minutes later with a goal by Mason Currah to send the game into the third with Pinedale leading 2-1. In net again for the Glaciers was All State Goalie Tyson Ramirez and with a 2-goal lead Tyson locked down the Moose offence, only allowing 3 goals on 34 shots. With 11 minutes left in the third Hardty Huffman would score the game winning goal to help Pinedale capture the title with a final score of 5-2.
It was an amazing year for the Pinedale high school hockey club. On top of winning the state championship, Pinedale had four players receive All State honors including forwards Hardty Huffman and Dace Rhea and defenders Tyler Currah and Goalie Tyson Ramirez.
