PHS golfers shoot for success at Evanston

PINEDALE – Entering week two of competition on a high note, the Pinedale High School golf team hit its stride at the Evanston Invitational at the Purple Sage Golf Course on Thursday and Friday, Aug. 17-18.

The boys’ varsity squad snapped up third place overall with a cumulative tally of 682 strokes following two days of competition. Pinedale beat out Green River, Kemmerer, Lyman, Rock Springs and Star Valley.

Fielding a single athlete in the girls’ varsity division, the Lady Wranglers did not place as a team.

Junior Elyn Bowers broke into the top 10 in girls’ varsity, tying for sixth place with a two-day score of 192. Bowers posted 102 on the first day before moving up significantly on the leaderboard with 90 strokes on day two.

In boys’ varsity, freshman Braxton Costello garnered seventh place with a two-day total of 160. On the first day, Costello tallied a score of 82, improving on the second day to shoot 78.

Senior Brody Hamby came within one stroke of the top 10 in boys’ varsity, earning 11th place with a total of 165 after the second day. Hamby advanced on the leaderboard from 86 on the first day to 79 on day two.

Fellow senior Owen McMillen tallied 179 over two days of competition, shooting consistently at 89 on the first day and 90 on the second.

Sophomore Dune Mecartney posted a two-day total of 178 on the leaderboard – advancing from 94 in the first round to 84 in the second round.

Rounding out the boys’ varsity division, sophomore Decker Normington shot 184 (94-90) following both rounds.

In boys’ junior varsity, sophomore Grant Carter tallied a two-day total of 204 with junior Alex Gosar posting 189 and freshman Matthew Gosar at 226.

The Lady Wranglers and Wranglers competed at the Jackson Invitational on Wednesday, Aug. 23. Results were not available at press time.

On Thursday, Aug. 24, PHS tees off at Star Valley Ranch.
