GREEN RIVER – An exceptional second day of competition by the Pinedale High School golf team resulted in the varsity boys snagging third place as a team with 647 points at the 3A West Conference Championships in Green River on Sept. 8-9.

Rewriting history, the varsity boys posted the best golf team score by PHS in the annals of the program.

Senior Brody Hamby completed the epic two-day event capturing third place in varsity boys with a combined score of 148. Advancing on the leaderboard from a first-day total of 75, Hamby improved by two decisive points on the second day to tally 73 and earn bronze.

Freshman Braxton Costello secured fourth place in boys’ varsity following two days of competition with a total score of 149. Costello moved up on the leaderboard from 75 strokes to 74 the second day.

Stepping up to represent the Lady Wranglers at the tournament, junior Elyn Bowers broke into the top 10 in girls’ varsity with a seventh-place finish and a cumulative score of 186. Bowers progressed from 96 on the first day to shoot 90 on the second day, climbing up the leaderboard by a significant margin.

Overall, both the girls’ and boys’ varsity squads made considerable growth from playing “solid” golf on the first day of conferences to post outstanding performances in the second round, said Head Coach Luke Myszewski.

“It’s hard to imagine the conference tournament going much better for us than it did,” Myszewski added. “The second day we really turned things on. The main thing was that every single varsity golfer scored better on day two than day one. The fact that every player performed better on the second day is what I am the most proud of, because I don’t think any other team did that. That improvement across the board led to the best team score a PHS golf team has posted at a culminating event in the history of the program – that’s pretty cool!”

Hamby, Costello and Bowers each earned 3A All-Conference honors for their achievements at the tournament.

“We also have three All-Conference golfers because of that performance on the second day,” said Coach Myszewski. “Brody, Braxton and Elyn each individually did great.”

Senior Owen McMillen completed the tournament in the boys’ varsity division with a two-day score of 169, improving from 88 on the first day to 81 on the second.

Sophomore Dune Mecartney tallied 181 following both days, advancing on the leaderboard from an opening-day score of 93 to 88 on the second day.

Fellow sophomore Decker Normington posted a cumulative score of 187, progressing from 96 in the first round to 91 in the second round.

Junior Alex Gosar posted a two-day score of 199 (101-98) with sophomore Grant Carter at 205 (99-106) and freshman Matthew Gosar tallying 217 (116-101).

Next up is the 3A State Golf Tournament in Worland on Sept. 15-16. Tee times are 9 a.m. both days.

“It’s exciting to do well at Conference, but we’re not done yet,” said Coach Myszewski. “We have a few things we will be focusing on this week in preparation for State.”
