Lady Wranglers kick off against Bridger Valley teams

Posted

PINEDALE – Wyoming’s volatile spring weather cooperated long enough for the Pinedale High School Lady Wrangler soccer team to host its first home game against Lyman on Friday, April 14.

High snow drifts ringing the soccer pitch and a determined westerly wind did not dampen the Lady Wranglers’ resolve to attack the ball and put up a fight against the Lady Eagles.

A tight Pinedale defense held Lyman to only 2 points in the first half. The Lady Eagles pulled up by 4 points in the second half to seal the win, 6-0.

“The girls are improving each week and all the hard work is starting to show,” said Head Coach Shanda Jensen. “We have two new goalies – Samantha Brannan and Erin Murphy – and they are doing exceptional.”

The Eagles opened Friday’s game on the attack. Senior Miros Gutierrez blocked a shot on goal by Lyman. Junior Hannah Stone and senior Molly Murphy battled the Lyman offense as the Lady Eagles attempted to score. Brannon made a save from Pinedale’s goal area.

On offense, junior Anna Lehr, senior Addison Bing and senior Madison Zook struck deep into Lyman territory.

The Lady Eagles scored their first point.

Junior Ana Mika prevented a pass and Gutierrez cleared the ball. Brannan grabbed another save and Stone shut down a pass.

Lyman managed to score a second goal.

Zook, Murphy, junior Fatima Valles and sophomore Cora Koci maneuvered the ball into Lyman territory. Koci launched a powerful shot on goal. Murphy also advanced toward Lyman’s goal to deliver a shot on goal.

The Pinedale defense closed ranks on Lyman, averting another goal from the Lady Eagles. Brannan tallied up multiple saves and Murphy, Valles, Gutierrez and Stone cleared the ball.

Murphy and Zook ended the first half in possession.

Bing, Zook and sophomore Avery Hughes kept the ball in Lyman territory as the second half commenced. Mika shut down two attempts by the Lady Eagles to score. Brannan tallied five saves and sophomore Hailey Shelinbarger prevented a pass.

Lyman scored two more goals.

Gutierrez, Koci and sophomore Victoria Ramage each managed to clear the ball. Bing and Hughes both broke through the Lyman defense to make a shot on goal.

Lyman added 2 points to the scoreboard.

Brannan rounded the second half out with four additional saves.

Pinedale traveled to Green River to play conference rival Mountain View on Saturday, April 15. Mountain View led, 3-0, at halftime. A strengthened Lady Wrangler defense held Mountain View to a single goal in the second half with the Lady Buffalos ultimately pulling out the win, 4-0.

Pinedale hosts Cody at 3 p.m. on Friday, April 21, and hits the road to play Powell on Saturday.
