PINEDALE – “Go Navy, beat Army!” That famous slogan will soon become fighting words for Pinedale High School senior Isabella Romasko after she presents for Induction Day this summer at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.
Romasko signed to compete on the Naval Academy's track and field team at a ceremony in the Wrangler Gym on March 23. The second-oldest service academy in the country, founded in 1845, is a nationally top-ranked academic institution and member of the NCAA Division I, primarily affiliated with the Patriot League Conference.
“I feel like I’m still in shock,” Romasko said on Tuesday about her acceptance into the prestigious academy. “I’m really excited and glad that I got in.”
Getting accepted into the U.S. Naval Academy is quite an achievement. With an 8-percent acceptance rate, the Naval Academy is the most selective service academy and ranks with Dartmouth College, Duke University and the Julliard School in terms of how many students make the cut.
Romasko explained the demanding application process requires hopefuls to jump through more hoops than most Ivy League Schools. In addition to writing three essays, Romasko stated that she had to secure multiple recommendations and nominations from U.S. senators, undergo medical examinations, conduct interviews with U.S. Navy officers and go through numerous background checks.
“It was worth it, though,” said Romasko. “I’m looking forward to serving my country.”
Romasko hopes to reach new heights in the triple jump as a Midshipman. The senior earned 2021 All-State honors in indoor track for the triple jump and 2020 All-State recognition in the 55-meter hurdles for indoor track.
During the last outdoor track season in 2019, Romasko was State Champion and All-State recipient in the triple jump and also made All-State in 100-meter hurdles. Romasko won the State Championship and made All-State in 1-meter diving at the 2020 Wyoming Girls State Swimming and Diving Championships.
During her junior year, when the PHS indoor track team was affiliated with Star Valley, Romasko broke the Star Valley High School records in the 55-meter dash at 8.64 seconds, the 60-meter dash at 9.23 seconds and the triple jump, clearing 36 feet, 7 inches.
Romasko is an honors student at PHS, a member of the National Honor Society and as the PHS Student Council senior class secretary.
Romasko excels in math and science and is interested in pursuing a career in nuclear engineering.
