Gregory nominated for Scholar Athlete Award

PINEDALE – Pinedale High School senior Carson Gregory is nominated for the National Football Foundation – Wyoming Chapter's 2021 Scholar-Athlete Award.

Ninety-six student athletes from 27 Wyoming high schools representing all five classifications made the list for outstanding academic and athletic achievement, according to a press release from Wyopreps on Jan. 4. University of Wyoming athletes are also eligible for the National Football Foundation (NFF) award.

Coaches across the state pick students athletes that meet the award criteria, explained NFF Wyoming Chapter President Heath Hayes. The head football coach, principal and activities director must endorse each nominee, Hayes added.

The Scholar-Athlete Award is weighted 40 percent on the student’s football accomplishments, Hayes said. The Wyoming chapter looked at All-State and All-Conference lists and statistical leaders in each category.

Forty percent is based on academics, including GPA, ACT test scores and enrollment in Advanced Placement classes, Hayes stated.

The remaining 20 percent is based on community involvement, emphasizing membership in school activities, community service and leadership, Hayes continued.

Gregory played defensive end and center for the Wranglers this year. He lettered in football his sophomore, junior and senior years and served as team captain the last two years.

Gregory made the 2A West All Conference First Team roster in 2019 and 2020. He won the Wyoming High School Activities Association's Distinguished Scholastic Achievement Award for football, 2017-2020, and track, 2018-2020 (the 2020 track season ended early).

Gregory achieved the Wyoming Coaches Association Academic Award for football, 2017-2020, and track, 2018-2020.

During the 2019-2020 academic year, Gregory represented Pinedale on the WHSAA's Join the Ride sportsmanship initiative.

Gregory was inducted into the National Honor Society in 2019 and is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Pinedale Chapter Leadership Team. The American Legion selected Gregory as a delegate from Pinedale to Boys' State in 2020.

In fall 2019, Gregory received the bronze and silver certificate as part of the Congressional Award program, followed by the gold certificate in spring 2020 and the bronze medal in winter 2020

The NFF Wyoming chapter board will choose 10 finalists out of the 96 nominees from each classification to receive the Scholar-Athlete Award and a $1,200 scholarship from the NFF, Hayes said. A Scholar-Athlete of the Year is then picked by the board from the finalists to receive an additional $1,200 scholarship.

Hayes added that each nominee was ‘pretty remarkable’ for balancing community service, sports and school to be "great student athletes."

"We have lots of special kids in Wyoming that do good things," he said.
