RIVERTON – Winding down the regular season, the Wrangler golf team mixed things up with match play at the Riverton Invitational on Sept. 2-3.
Event organizers divided golfers into six 16-person brackets based on an athlete’s season scoring averages. Players participated in up to four matches over two days at the Riverton Country Club.
“Each golfer saw at least a little success at the Riverton match play–skins tournament,” said head coach Luke Myszewski. “I think we are in a good place going into the conference tournament. Each golfer has gotten progressively better as the season has progressed. I am excited to see what they can do in the postseason.”
Sophomore Brody Hamby won two of four matches. Hamby’s overall score stood at a 184 after two days of competition, improving from a 93 on day one to a 91.
Owen McMillen, also a sophomore, won one of four matches. He hit in a 187 over two days, shooting in 90 strokes the first day and 97 the following day.
Big Piney junior Blade Hibbert won two of four matches. His overall score was a 200 – 96 on the first day and 104 on the second day.
Sophomore Josh Gosar won three of four matches. Gosar finished with a cumulative score of 205 strokes, improving from a 104 the first day to a 101.
Fellow sophomore Mason Currah won one of two matches and won two holes outright among his group, or two skins, during the tournament. Currah’s two-day score was a 231. He made a significant leap from a 123 on day one to a 108 on day two.
Two freshmen – Cayden Christensen and Garrett Haley – entered their first varsity tournament of the season.
Christensen won one of two matches with two skins won. His overall score stood at a 220, improving from a 112 the first day to a 108.
Haley won three skins in the course of two matches. He shot in 228 strokes over two days, with a 109 on the first day and a 119 the second day.
The Wranglers host the 3A/4A East Conference Championships on Sept. 10-11, where golfers compete to qualify for the 3A State Tournament in Lander. Tee-off time is 11 a.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. Saturday at Rendezvous Meadows Golf Course in Pinedale.
