Girls' swim team battles regional rivals

KEMMERER – The Sublette County combined girlsswim team found success over the course of a busy week featuring two meets.

The action opened with Sublette County taking third place and tallying 46 team points at the Kemmerer Invite on September 12.

Athletes boarded the bus to square off against the same teams at the Lyman Invite on Saturday, September 14. Team scores were not kept at the meet, but many Sublette County swimmers broke into the top five.

Sublette County also competed at Lymans homecoming meet on Tuesday, September 17. Results were not available at press time.

Kemmerer top five

Freshman Maggie Williams snapped up gold in the 200-meter individual medley, posting a time of 3 minutes, 2.28 seconds. Williams reached the finish line more than 10 seconds ahead of Evanstons Raquel Rasmussen.

Williams went on to secure second place in the 100-meter backstroke with a time of 1:27.90.

Timing the 100-meter butterfly in at 1:36.97, KaLea Bohnet snagged first place in the event. Bohnet finished with four seconds to spare over the runner-up, Kemmerers Kalyn Lockwood.

Senior Alexis Thompson garnered bronze in the 200-freestyle, clocking in at 2:48.23.

Fellow senior Maggie Walker pulled into third place in the 100-meter breaststroke, finishing the event in 1:42.34. Walker also took fourth place in the 50-meter freestyle sprint with a time of 33.52 seconds.

Junior Libby Olson clinched fourth place in the 100-freestyle, posting a time of 1:18.96. In the 200-freestyle, Olson bagged fifth place at 2:55.62.

Rounding out individual top five at Kemmerer, freshman Aylen Mills came in fifth place in the 100-meter backstroke, timing in at 1:30.52.

The 200-meter freestyle relay team – senior Matazi Landers, Thompson, Williams and Walker – captured silver with a time of 2:12.33. Sophomore Eva Scherbel, Bohnet, junior Clairee Bingham and junior Kamia Runyan placed fourth in the event with a time of 2:24.23.

In the 200-meter medley relay, Mills, Williams, Bohnet and Scherbel bagged bronze, clocking in at 2:38.88.

Thompson, sophomore Addison Kinnamon, junior Anna Wexels and junior Aurora Rees snagged fifth place in the 400-meter freestyle relay, reaching the finish line in 5:46.39.

Lyman top five

Williams won the 100-yard backstroke, clocking in at 1:15.51. The runner-up, Lymans Brooke Gossard, finished nearly three seconds behind Williams. Williams went on to take bronze in the 200-yard individual medley at 2:45.37.

Scherbel picked up bronze in the 500-yard freestyle, timing in at 7:07.68. Rees took fourth in the event, posting a time of 7:26.03, while Kinnamon placed fifth at 8:08.77.

Freshman Mesa Landers pulled into third place in the 100-yard backstroke, timing in at 1:20.46. Landers also finished fourth in the 50-freestyle at 30.88 seconds.

In the 200-freestyle, Thompson came in fourth place with a time of 2:34.15.

Relay highlights included bronze for Thompson, Runyan, Mesa Landers and Scherbel in the 400-freestyle relay at 4:44.04.

Junior Shelby Scott, Williams, Bohnet and Bingham took third place in the 200-yard medley relay, posting a time of 2:19.36.

Thompson, Olson, Scherbel and Scott secured fifth place in the 200-yard freestyle relay, timing in at 2:04.25.

• 400-freestyle: Scherbel in sixth place at 6:12.16, Rees ninth at 6:28.27, Runyan 10th at 6:28.97, Scott 11th at 6:30.80, Bingham 13th at 6:42.75, Kinnamon 15th at 7:12.90 and Chelsea Wright 16th at 7:14.22.

• 100-backstroke: Mesa Landers eighth at 1:33.25 and Matazi Landers 10th at 1:34.60.

• 400-free relay: Wright, Mesa Landers, Francis and Arne in sixth place at 6:05.81.
