Punchers take third in the state
CASPER – The Big Piney volleyball team finished third at the Class 2A state championships, bringing home hardware for the second year in a row.
The Punchers went 3-1 at state, falling to Wright in the semifinals, but rallying to win the next two matches to take third. Big Piney beat Big Horn, 3-2, in the consolation semifinals and then beat Greybull in the third-place match, 3-1.
Grace Tanner and Cadee Mager were both named all-state. n
Punchers come up short in semis
GLENROCK – With two minutes left in the Class 2A state football semifinals, Big Piney trailed Glenrock by three points, 30-27.
The Punchers were moving the ball, but their drive stalled at Glenrock's 20-yard line.
On fourth-and-four, Big Piney decided a 37-yard field goal would be a long attempt and the Punchers went for it. Glenrock, however, tackled the Punchers short of the first-down marker and ran out the clock on the ensuing possession.
Big Piney's semifinal may have ended with a close score, but it didn't start that way.
With two minutes left in the first half, Big Piney trailed 17-0 and Glenrock was threatening to score again. The Punchers, however, made a stop on fourth-and-short and then drove 90 yards down the field and scored a touchdown just before halftime.
The Punchers continued to claw their way back into the game in the second half, but they never quite caught up to the Herders.
