Another black eye for Wyoming

Posted

Dear Editor,

There is a coyote killing contest scheduled this weekend in Sublette County with cash and prizes awarded to the “winners.” It is unconscionable that such an event would be permitted, especially in the wake of last year's horrific incident where Cody Roberts brutally killed a wolf after running it down with a snowmobile – an act that rightfully drew widespread condemnation.

These killing contests are nothing more than wildlife slaughter masquerading as sport. They have no place in a civilized society, and they certainly have no place in Sublette County - or anywhere in our state. While proponents may attempt to justify these events under the guise of predator management, let's call this what it really is: a cruel blood sport that makes a game out of killing.

Sublette County is still trying to recover from the shame brought by last year's wolf killing incident. This contest threatens to cement the region's reputation as a place hostile to wildlife, potentially damaging the tourism industry and further alienating those who expect better from this community. Another black eye cannot be afforded – morally or economically.

The organizers must immediately cancel this egregious event. If they refuse, local officials and community leaders must speak out against it. Sublette County must stand for responsible wildlife management and ethical hunting practices, not senseless killing for entertainment.

Sincerely,

Kristin Combs,
Wilson, Wyo.
