PINEDALE – Pinedale High School junior and Nordic skier Zane Hayward was chosen to receive the Ricky J. Caller Memorial Award this season. The award is presented to one skier each year and is chosen by the high school ski coach in honor of Ricky Caller, who graduated from Pinedale High School in 1968.
Caller was an avid skier who died in an avalanche doing what he loved to do, Nordic skiing. Caller’s family started the award in the early 1970s and asked the coaches to choose an individual with a true love and passion for Nordic skiing, who works to better themselves in skiing and who supports their teammates and others to become better skiers.
Hayward was presented with a traveling trophy that contains pictures of Ricky Caller and is engraved with all the names of those who have received the award throughout the years. Hayward’s name will be added to the trophy and he will keep it with him until the end of the Nordic ski season next year, when a new recipient will be chosen.
