Wrangler volleyball opens season at Cokeville

COKEVILLE – The Lady Wranglers kicked off the 2021 volleyball season at the Cokeville Tournament on Aug. 27-28. Teams gathered from across Wyoming and Idaho, representing programs of all sizes.

Pinedale played three preliminary games on Friday, beating Green River and Grace, Idaho before falling to Cokeville. Teams divided into bracket play on Saturday with Pinedale placed in the Gold bracket.

The Lady Wranglers took on conference rival Mountain View in the first bracket game, falling after three sets. In consolation play, Pinedale played Grace, Idaho, and handily beat the Grizzlies a second time.

The opening match against 4A Green River turned into an all-out heater with the lead bouncing back and forth over the net in a five-set marathon. Pinedale won the first set, 25-15. Green River rebounded in the second set with a 25-20 win.

Determined to hold the line, the Lady Wranglers edged ahead to win a hotly contested third set, 25-21. Green River upped the ante in the fourth set with a 25-19 victory, tying the game, 2-2.

True to form, the Lady Wranglers withstood the attack to pull ahead in the tiebreaker, 15-11, and win the game, 3-2.

Pinedale scored a 3-0 victory against Grace, Idaho. The Lady Wranglers set the momentum in the first set, winning by a significant margin, 25-11. Grace put up resistance in second set, yet were unable to overcome the Lady Wranglers and Pinedale took the win, 25-22. Back in the groove by the third set, the Lady Wranglers sailed to a 25-16 victory.

Cokeville proved to be a challenging opponent. Battling point by point in a tight first set, Cokeville slipped ahead at the end for a 2-point victory, 25-23.

The Lady Wranglers rallied in the second set and scored a dominating 25-6 win.

Refusing to throw in the towel, Cokeville took the third set, 25-15. Pinedale fought to tie the game in a close fourth set, but Cokeville pulled ahead at the last minute for a 25-20 win and 3-1 victory.

On Saturday, Pinedale hit the court against 3A conference rival Mountain View in bracket play. Mountain View pulled out all the stops, winning all three sets, 25-24, 25-13 and 25-8.

The Lady Wranglers found themselves in the consolation round for a second bout against Grace, Idaho. Pinedale won a nailbiter first set, 25-23. Stepping up the intensity, the Lady Wranglers swept the floor in the second and third set, 25-11 and 25-12, for a 3-0 victory.
