DOUGLAS — The Pinedale boys golf team just missed winning a team trophy at the state championships last weekend (Sept. 14-15) in Douglas.

After the Wrangler boys struggled in the conference meet, the golfers came back strong and shot some solid rounds to finish fourth out of 14 teams. The Wrangler girls placed eighth in the Class 3A state championships.

"The boys team played much better at state than they did at conference," coach Luke Myszewski said. "I was very happy with how they bounced back, especially considering there were 14 teams there competing. I felt they played up to their capabilities and a fourth-place finish was a good one for us."

Blake Illoway shot a 92 and a 96 to lead Pinedale with a two-day score of 188. He finished 22nd overall.

Danny Gosar and Tommy LoBuda both had two-day scores of 190. Gosar shot a 98 and then a 92 while LaBuda started strong with an 87 and then shot a 103

Kolten Hansen shot a 105 and then a 97 to finish at 202. Teagan Pennock shot a 115 and then lowered his score by 22 strokes to finish at 208.

Chayla Saaxton shot a 110 and a 115 to lead the Lady Wranglers with a 225. Saxton finished 21st overall.

Kodie Hammer shot a 125 and a 123 while Hannah LaBuda shot a 136 and a 147.

Lander Valley won both team titles. The Lander boys finished first with 671, followed by Douglas (690), Star Valley (719), Pinedale (760), Cody (762), Worland (763), Powell (772), Wheatland (786), Buffalo (819), Thermopolis (821), Lyman (831) and Rawlins (849).

The Lander girls shot a 602 to repeat as state champs. Buffalo (615) finished second, followed by Torrington (617), Riverton (642), Cody (648), Star Valley (651), Worland (686), Pinedale (756) and Douglas (795). Powell, Rawlins, Thermopolis and Wheatland also competed, but did not post team scores.

Lander’s Jaren Calkins shot a 71 and 72 to win the boys’ individual title.

Torrington’s Caleigh Essert usurped Lander’s Macy Jacobson as the girls’ champion and kept the Tigers from sweeping the titles. Essert shot a 79 and a 78 to beat Jacobson by 14 strokes.
