ROCK SPRINGS – Local Sublette County cowboys and cowgirls wrapped up the regular rodeo season during last week’s Wyoming High School State Finals Rodeo at the Sweetwater Events Complex in Rock Springs.

The handful of local contestants fared well among the field of competitors from around the state and beyond, as a few earned State Champion buckles in their respective events, while others finished in the top four.

In girls cutting, Big Piney’s Rylee Whitman blew past others in the division to earn her fourth-straight State Champion title with a total of 244.5 points. Shae Bray, of Casper, came in second in the event after finishing the competition with 221.75 points.

In barrel racing, Big Piney cowgirl Karson Bradley finished out the season on a high note to be named the State Champion in the event, finishing out the season with 222.5 points. She bested Shay Hough, of Gillette, who finished closely behind with 215 total points.

Standout bull rider Wyatt Phelps, of Pinedale, was just shy of earning the first-place gold belt buckle in bull riding after finishing in second place with 128.25 points.

Those who placed in the top four of each event now move on to compete on the national stage against the top rodeo athletes from around the country. Local cowboys and cowgirls will have nearly a month to prepare for the National High School Rodeo, which will be held July 16-22 at the CAM-PLEX Event Facility in Gillette.
