Swimmers open season at Lyman, Rawlins Pentathlon

WYOMING – The Sublette County combined boys’ swim team dove into the 2022-2023 season with an action-packed weekend at the Lyman Invitational and Rawlins Pentathlon.

On Friday, Dec. 9, Sublette County placed third at Lyman with 126 points.

The Rawlins Pentathlon on Saturday required athletes to complete five events – the 100-butterfly, 100-backstroke, 50-freestyle, 100-breaststroke and 100-freestyle – to place.

Senior Dillon Boespflug captured eighth place overall out of 49 swimmers who completed all five events at Rawlins with a combined time of 4 minutes, 39.63 seconds.

Junior Andy DeClue and senior Owen Nielson placed 17th and 18th, respectively, at the pentathlon. DeClue posted a combined time of 4:57.16 with Nielson coming in at 4:58.69.

“We are proud of Dillon for taking eighth place at Rawlins,” wrote Co-Head Coaches Kursty Day and Cheryl Grossman. “We also want to give a shoutout to Andy and Owen for placing in the top 20.”

Boespflug punched his ticket to State over the weekend, qualifying in six individual events – the 200-individual medley, the 50-freestyle, 100-freestyle, 100-breaststroke, 100-butterfly and 100-backstroke.

At the Lyman Invitational, Boespflug captured gold in the 100-butterfly, timing in at 1:01.83. He took second place in the 200-individual medley with a time of 2:25.00.

Nielson earned a place on the State roster in four individual events – the 500-freestyle, 100-freestyle, 100-butterfly and 50-freestyle.

Nielson snagged first place in the 50-freestyle at Lyman, finishing the sprint in 25.25 seconds. He scored silver in the 500-freestyle, clocking in at 5:55.83.

DeClue also qualified in four events at Lyman and Rawlins – the 200-freestyle, 100-freestyle, 100-butterfly and 50-freestyle.

Posting a time of 2:03.25 in the 200-freestyle at Lyman, DeClue came in second place.

Additional Lyman highlights included junior Ryen Hacklin scooping up bronze in the 100-freestyle with a time of 59.63 seconds. Fellow junior John Ruby finished third in the 500-freestyle, completing the long-distance event in 6:17.28.

“We are off to a great start for this season,” said coaches Day and Grossman. “Everyone showed maximum effort on Friday in Lyman and Rawlins. We are excited to add three swimmers to the State roster in several events. We are proud of every one of our swimmers. The returning swimmers all swam faster than their fastest times last year. Our new freshmen showed a lot of potential and willingness to try new events. We are excited to be a part of this team and see what they can accomplish this season.”

• 200-medley relay: Boespflug, Calleb Willson, Nielson and Ruby in second place at 1:58.94; Scotty Ring, Reuben Allen, Kaden Day and Kyle Donaldson in fifth place at 2:31.55.

• 200-freestyle: Day in eighth place at 2:29.28.

• 50-freestyle: Ruby in fourth place at 27.20 seconds, Willson in sixth at 29.37, Donaldson in ninth at 35.39, Allen in 10th at 38.61 and Logan Visser in 11th at 39.08.

• 100-freestyle: Ring in sixth place at 1:08.56, Donaldson in eighth at 1:21.05 and Visser in ninth at 1:30.81.

• 500-freestyle: Day in fourth place at 6:31.79.

• 200-freestyle relay: Hacklin, Boespflug, Willson and DeClue in second place at 1:47.73; Ring, Allen, Donaldson and Visser in fourth place at 2:27.43.

• 100-backstroke: Hacklin in fifth place at 1:15.55 and Ring in sixth at 1:25.48.

• 100-breaststroke: Willson in fourth place at 1:21.16, DeClue in sixth at 1:21.80 and Allen in seventh at 1:47.71.

• 400-freestyle relay: Ruby, Hacklin, Nielson and DeClue in third place at 4:10.71.
