SUBLETTE COUNTY – The artists of Mixed Media traveled to Dubois, Wyo., for a magical, mad celebration of Mardi Gras at the annual Wyoming Artists’ Association (WAA) convention May 5-7.

WAA president and Big Piney artist Sharon Schell’s organizational skills and creativity were evident in the glittering Mardi Gras theme decorations, banquet table settings and costume designs. The colorful atmosphere was the catalyst for a festive, fun-filled and eventful weekend.

The organization was proud to present the Grand Wyoming Artist trophy to Debbie Despain of Big Piney. The award honors an artist who is not only dedicated to the mission of WAA, but is an advocate for art in his or her community.

The art exhibit with its array of beautiful and diverse paintings and sculpture raised the bar for future conventions. The exhibit judge was Victor, Idaho, artist, Susan M. Rose, who selected Susan Grinels’ Other as Best in Show. The awards garnered by local artists are as follows: Richard Burke, Pinedale: “Governor’s Award,” which will be on display at the Wyoming Governor’s Office for a year; and third places in Sculpture and Other. McKenzi Davison, Big Piney: “President’s Choice” and “People’s Choice” with second place in Graphics and honorable mention in Other. Laurie LaMere, Pinedale and Jackson: “Congressional Show,” which will be displayed in Wyoming's Congressional offices in Washington, D. C., for a year, and third place in Theme. Charmian McLellan, Boulder: Third place in Oil and honorable mention in Miniature. Kay Meeks, Daniel: “Congressional Show,” third place in Pastel and third place in Miniature. Ruth Rawhouser, Big Piney: First place in Oil and Watercolor, second place in Theme. Sharon Schell, Big Piney: First place in Theme and Pottery, second place in Sculpture. Ann Anspach, of Taylor, Ariz., and formerly of Pinedale, placed second in Watercolor.

The 2018 WAA convention will be held in Jackson under the direction of president Laurie LaMere. The new vice-president/secretary is Laurell Fogg of Cheyenne.
