Scoring woes hinder Wranglers in loss

PINEDALE – It was a strong showing from the Pinedale High School boys varsity soccer team as it took to the field at home last Friday evening to host the Rawlins Outlaws.

The Wranglers started the matchup looking strong out on the field, according to head coach JD Dudrey.

“We started strong possessing the ball most of the first half,” he said.

Even though the Wranglers were in control for the majority of the opening half, when it came to finding an opening to sneak in a goal, Pinedale couldn’t find the back of the net.

“We had several opportunities early,” Dudrey said. “The best one came on a Vicente Acosta free kick that hit the inside of the goal post.”

The junior’s shot didn’t go in however, and the Outlaws went into halftime with an early 1-0 advantage.

It was more of the same for Pinedale as the team resumed play in the second half, still keeping possession of the ball for the majority of the half. However, scoring woes continued to hamper the Wranglers, eventually bringing the team a 2-0 loss.

The coach commended the efforts of junior Noel Aguirre in the match, as the athlete took on five different positions throughout the game.

“He excelled everywhere we put him,” Dudrey said.

The coach was also pleased with what he saw from sophomore Toby Covill, who filled in as goalkeeper and served the team well in his debut in a varsity game.

The coach said they had plenty of opportunities to score in the second half but they just couldn’t connect where they needed to.

“We had many opportunities again with several of them coming from corner kicks,” the coach noted. “We just couldn’t get the ball to bounce our way and go into the back of the net.”

Despite the loss, Dudrey saw a lot of positives out on the field, including solid passing between teammates and using the entire field, which they have worked on in practice. The biggest thing he would like to see improvement on is scoring.

“We need to find a way to score,” he said. “We defend well and keep control of the ball, now we need to progress to putting the ball in the goal.”

With spring break taking place this week, those who stayed in town were able to get a lot of extra practice prior to heading to Worland today to compete in the Pinnacle Challengers Cup Tournament. The Wranglers kick off the two-day tournament with a matchup against No. 5-ranked 3A opponent Lander at 1 p.m. today. Depending on who wins and loses, the team will then take on either Green River or Douglas at 4 p.m. this afternoon.
