Hamby and Costello earn All-State honors
WORLAND – The Pinedale High School golf team capped off an historic 2023 season with outstanding performances at the 3A State Golf Tournament hosted by Green Hills Golf Course in Worland on Sept. 15-16.
The varsity boys’ team garnered fourth place out of 15 3A teams competing at the season-culminating event with a two-day score of 663 strokes.
Senior Brody Hamby broke into the top 10 in boys’ varsity to snag fifth place with a combined score of 148. Hamby shot consistently in both rounds, posting 73 on Friday and 75 on Saturday.
Freshman Braxton Costello also captured a spot in the top 10, securing sixth place at 152 following two days of competition. Costello improved from 77 in the first round to tally 75 strokes in the second round.
Hamby and Costello each earned 3A All-State honors for their accomplishments at State this year.
“The performances from Brody and Braxton at State were impressive,” said Head Coach Luke Myszewski. “There can be a lot of extra pressure going into State, especially this year in 3A golf. Going into the tournament, we were thinking that the only way to make All-State would be to shoot in the 70s both days, which turned out to be true. Brody and Braxton handled the pressure well.”
When Hamby and Costello both tallied scores in the 70s on Friday, Myszewski knew All-State was within reach for the two Wranglers.
“On the second day, Brody and Braxton were both in a great headspace and they just kept grinding to the end,” Myszewski added. “That effort and focus paid off. I am proud of both of those boys for how they handled themselves and all of the work they put into their season.”
Junior Elyn Bowers represented the Lady Wranglers in girls’ varsity, scoring a two-day total of 192. Bowers’ steady performance consisted of 96 each in both round.
Senior Owen McMillen placed 41st in boys’ varsity with a combined score of 182, shooting 88 on day one and 94 on the second day.
Sophomore Decker Normington came in 42nd place at 184, posting consistent scores of 92 on both days of competition.
Rounding out boys’ varsity, sophomore Dune Mecartney finished in 51st place with a total score of 192 – 89 on day one and 103 on day two.
“The team had a solid performance at State,” said Coach Myszewski. “Each player was pretty consistent from one day to the next.”
