Lady Wranglers stack up the wins

Posted

PINEDALE – Jumping into week two of conference play, the Lady Wranglers scored a significant 47-37 victory over 3A quadrant rival Kemmerer on Friday, Jan. 29. Following a close first quarter, Pinedale took the ball and ran with it during the second and third quarter, trouncing the Lady Rangers in scoring.

Friday’s victory moved the Lady Wranglers into the No. 2 spot in the 3A Southwest Quadrant, behind Lyman.

“We played a pretty good game for four quarters,” said head coach Mike Davis. “Any conference win is a good win at this point. The first quarter was a little slow, but we adjusted to Kemmerer’s size and shooting and held their top player to eight points, half her average. We used our defense to propel us to the win and played a great third quarter offensively.”

The team gelled together under the pressure, coach Davis added.

“Grace Davis had her best game of the year shooting-wise and led us in rebounds with nine – very impressive. Roxanne Rogers scored the ball well and led with assists and is improving at finding open teammates.

“Kia Hansen and Emma Rogers guarded Kemmerer’s two big players and did an outstanding job as shut down defenders. Abigail Hawke did well rebounding down low. Sara Kunard came in and only had one turnover, which is awesome at the varsity level. Alaine Liserio ran the floor hard and rebounded the ball well.”

The Lady Rangers outscored Pinedale by one point during a tight first quarter, 9-8. Roxanne Rogers and Davis both shot in two free throws and a 2-pointer.

Pinedale answered back in the second quarter, tossing in 14 points to nine from Kemmerer. Hansen launched her first outside shot against Kemmerer.

Halftime found Pinedale ahead, 22-18.

The third period turned into a rout of Kemmerer as the Lady Wranglers dropped in 15 points and Pinedale’s defense held the Rangers to six. Davis ramped up the pressure with a pair of 2-pointers and a deep shot from outside the perimeter. Roxanne Rogers added a 3-pointer to the tally and made three of four free throws.

Kemmerer fought back offensively in the final quarter, scoring 13 points to 10 from Pinedale. Hansen shot in her second 3-pointer along with a 2-pointer. Davis made use of the charity stripe to score three points.

Three Lady Wranglers finished the match with double digits. Davis led with 16 points. Roxanne Rogers contributed 13 points to the roster and Hansen 10. Hawke scored four points and Kunard and Emma Rogers both shot in two points.

Davis dominated the rebound game with a total of nine. Roxanne Rogers, Emma Rogers and Hawke all caught six rebounds.

Roxanne Rogers played five assists. Emma Rogers and Hawke both snatched three steals.

Coach Davis said the team looks forward to playing 3A opponents Powell and Lovell this weekend – a possible sampler for the postseason.

“They’ll both be big teams,” he said. “We’ll continue to stress ball pressure and turning teams over.”
