Lady Wranglers get their digs in against Bridger Valley duo

WYOMING – The Lady Wranglers fought to unseat Mountain View and Lyman from the top two seeds in the 3A Southwest Quadrant on Oct. 14-15.

Lyman pulled out its heavy hitters to win the first two sets during Thursday’s home game.

Undeterred, the Lady Wranglers regrouped in the third set, going on the offensive to score a win. Lyman pulled ahead in the fourth set to take the victory, 3-1.

Mountain View posed a particular challenge, boasting an undefeated conference record and a 25-2 record overall.

The Buffalos took the win, 3-0, although the Lady Wranglers made their opponent battle for every point. Pinedale threatened to upset Mountain View in close second and third sets, with the Lady Wranglers leading for a majority of the third set.

Lyman

The Eagles took the first set, setting up an early lead that proved difficult to overcome. Senior Roxanne Rogers and junior Haylen Sandner scored the first offensive points for Pinedale.

Seniors Abigail Hawke and Maggie Harber scored points 3 and 4 with defensive blocks.

Junior McKenzie Illoway delivered a hit for point 5. Despite two impressive digs deep in the court by junior Toree Andersen, Lyman widened its lead.

Hawke hit over point 6, assisted by sophomore Reagan Davis. Senior Darby Clause aced point 7.

Hawke, Sandner and Harber scored points defending the net for Pinedale. Illoway struck with a kill for point 13, assisted by Davis.

The Eagles took over the match and scored the win, 25-14.

Lyman maintained its momentum in the second set, hitting over one point after another.

Roxanne Rogers fired off four kills, assisted by freshman Gabrielle Rogers on two. Sandner scored a kill and Harber tapped over a point before Lyman pulled ahead for the victory, 25-13.

Switching up their game in the third set, the Lady Wranglers went on the offensive. Lyman scored the first points until Roxanne Rogers tied the match with a kill and an ace. Defensive network by Sandner and Harber and a kill from Hawke put Pinedale in the lead.

Lyman regained the initiative, though only briefly.

Junior libero Sara Kunard dug deep, sent the ball to Davis, who set it up for Roxanne Rogers to hit over point 10. Pinedale caught up to Lyman at point 15 with a kill and two aces by Roxanne Rogers.

Harber blocked for point 16 and Sandner slammed over a kill for point 17. Hawke struck a blow with a pair of kills and a block, taking Pinedale to 20 points. Lyman failed to return a serve sent over by Clause for point 21. Roxanne Rogers hit over a pair of points, the first assisted by Davis. Sandner scored game point at the net, 25-19, in Pinedale’s favor.

The fourth set began neck-in-neck. Clause and Davis set the ball up for Roxanne Rogers to score a hit. A kill by Roxanne Rogers, assisted by Gabrielle Rogers, tied the set at point 4. Sandner slammed over a kill for point 5. Kunard dug deep, sent the ball to Davis, who set it up for Illoway to spike over a kill.

Sandner tapped over point 7. Harber scored a kill for point 8, followed by a hit from Illoway. Network by Sandner put two more points on the scoreboard for Pinedale.

Lyman pulled ahead and won the set, 25-13.

Mountain View

Pinedale took the initial lead with Sandner serving up an ace and Roxanne Rogers shooting over a kill. Mountain View took control at point 4 and never looked back. The Buffalos tangled with the net and hit the ball out of bounds on two serves from Clause.

Roxanne Rogers scored two offensive hits before the Buffalos won the set, 25-16.

Pinedale stepped up the intensity in a close second set. Mountain View remained ahead for most of the match, though Pinedale stayed close on its opponent’s heels.

Roxanne Rogers and Illoway fired off early kills. A pair of aces shot over by Roxanne Rogers and Illoway tied the set at point 7. Kills by Hawke and Roxanne Rogers and a dig from Sandner carried Pinedale to point 12.

Mountain View failed to return a serve from Kunard and sent its next serve into the net.

Kunard dug deep to score point 15. Hawke spiked over a pair of kills, the second assisted by Davis. Roxanne Rogers hit over point 19 before Mountain View pulled ahead for game point, 25-19.

Pinedale held onto the lead for most of the third set. Sandner set the pace with an ace. Kills slammed over by Roxanne Rogers, Sandner, Hawke and Illoway threw Mountain View off balance.

The Buffalos caught up at point 15. Hawke and Roxanne Rogers each pulled off a kill. Sandner played a block for point 17. Kunard dug deep and delivered point 19. Roxanne Rogers made a kill, assisted by Kunard and Clause.

Gabrielle Rogers served up an ace to tie the set at 21 points. Mountain View managed to pull ahead by 4 points for match point, 25-21.
