AFTON – The Pinedale volleyball team has taken plenty of strides this season, but those improvements didn't show up in the win column against its conference foes.

After falling to Star Valley, WyoPreps' No. 4 ranked team in 3A, in three games on Friday (Oct. 20), the Lady Wranglers finished fourth in the competitive league.

Star Valley won the contest 25-18, 25-22 and 25-19.

As the No. 4 seed, the Lady Wranglers (10-15, 0-5 3A southwest) will have their work cut out for them at the 3A West Regional championship this weekend in Riverton if they want to qualify for state Nov. 3-4 in Casper.

The top-four teams finishers will qualify.

As the No. 4 seed out of the 3A West's South Quadrant, Pinedale will begin the regional tournament against the 3A West North Quadrant champ, Cody, at 10 a.m. today. Cody went 6-0 in the 3A northwest and 20-7 overall to score the No. 5 state ranking.

The last time the teams met, Cody escaped with the win in five games.

The winner of the Pinedale/Cody contest will play the Powell (13-14, 2-4)/Star Valley (18-9, 4-2) winner in the semifinals at 4 p.m. today.

If Pinedale loses its first game, it will need to win its next two games to qualify for state, beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday against the Powell/Star Valley loser. The winner of that game will play the loser from the other semifinal in an elimination game later Saturday.

Lyman, the 3A Southwest champ and No. 3 ranked team in the state, is the No. 1 seed on the other side of the bracket after going 23-4 and 6-0 in the conference. Riverton (17-12, 4-2) is the No. 2 team out of the 3A West's North Quadrant. Mountain View (13-14) and Lander (2-25) will also compete on the other side of the bracket.

The top-two ranked teams in the state, Rawlins and Douglas, will compete in the 3A East regional championship.
