Glaciers earn silver at State


CASPER – The Glaciers’ 18U hockey team skated into second place in the “A” division at the 2021 Wyoming Amateur Hockey League’s State Tournament hosted by Casper on Feb. 27 and 28.

Pinedale scored victories against Jackson in the first two matches, advancing to the championship game against Gillette. A close, physical battle on the ice ended with Gillette pulling out the win by a single point, 3-2.

Round one pitted Pinedale against Jackson’s JV squad. Jackson scored the lone goal during the first period. The Glaciers answered back in the second period with a goal from Kolin Krizan, assisted by Colby White.

Micah Crum swept in with a goal in the third period. Jackson scored again to tie the match, 2-2, forcing the game into overtime. Both teams were unable to get the puck into the net in overtime, resulting in a shootout. Jackson missed its final shot during the shootout while Jayden Currah scored the eighth goal for the Glaciers, resulting in a 3-2 win for Pinedale.

Kellen Schupp served as Pinedale’s goalie and tallied 16 saves against Jackson.

The Glaciers dominated the second game, trouncing Jackson’s varsity squad, 5-1. Pinedale outscored its opponent, 2-1, in the first period. Logan Marroquin, assisted by Landon Wharton and Crum, shot in the Glaciers’ first goal. Crum followed up with a shot into the net off an assist by White and Currah.

Pinedale maintained its momentum through the second period, tossing in two points while Jackson failed to score. Devin Mohler shot in a goal off a play by Duke Carson. White scored a power play assisted by Crum and Krizan.

Crum, assisted by Boyd Boylan, scored the Glaciers’ fifth point in the final period. Schupp made 23 saves as goalie.

The championship game against Gillette on Sunday turned into a hotly contested duel between two top-notch teams vying for the State title. A physical first period ended with both opponents scoreless. Krizan shot in a power play in the second period, assisted by Carson and Boylan.

Gillette’s offense scored its first point early in the third period. Crum responded with a goal assisted by Marroquin. Gillette managed to get the puck into the net two more times to edge ahead.

Schupp defended the net and kept Gillette on its toes, catching a total of 42 saves.
