Artists’ convention coming to Sublette County

BIG PINEY — Artists from across the Cowboy State are expected to converge in Sublette County next month for the revival of the Wyoming Artists’ Association (WAA) annual convention — the first held since COVID forced the cancellation in 2020.

A group of WAA past presidents organized this year’s three-day convention, from June 9-11, to include a judged exhibition, workshops, a quick draw fundraiser on Friday and a Saturday evening banquet.

The 2023 convention’s theme is a tribute to Leonardo De Vinci, Claude Monet and Pablo Picasso — all of whom called France home at some point in their lives, so participants can expect a weekend full of French cuisine and decor.

Tammy Christel, a freelance writer and arts blogger from neighboring Jackson, was selected to judge the exhibition for WAA members. Christel consults on the arts for collectors, filmmakers and nonprofit organizations like the WAA.

Participating artists will benefit from two workshops, the first instructed by Heather McCullough, a watercolor artist from Venice, Fla. Jackson’s Tammy Callens, an oil painter specializing in portraits and landscapes, will lead the second workshop. They will share tips, tricks and advice for artists of all levels.

To learn more about McCullough’s watercolors and other works, visit her website at heathermcculloughartworks.com. For more information about Callens and to view her work, visit her website at tammycallens.com.

The past presidents who organized the upcoming event the weekend of June 9-11, promise it “will be a treat for all who attend, whether you are an artist participating in the entire weekend or an art lover looking for that special piece at either the art show or the quick draw.”

While the workshops are for WAA members, both the art show and the quick draw fundraiser are open to the public. The art show opens with the quick draw Friday, June 9, beginning at 7 p.m., immediately followed by a live-action at 8:30 p.m.; both are major fundraisers for the nonprofit artists’ association.

The art show will also be open to the public Saturday, June 10 from 2-5 p.m., and Sunday, June 11, from 9 a.m. - noon.

All the festivities take place in the event center at the Sublette County Fairgrounds, 10937 US-189, Big Piney, WY, 83113.
