Fremont Peak VFW Post 4801 has selected this year’s winners of the Voice of Democracy Audio Essay Competition.
Open to all ninth- through 12th-grade students, this year’s theme was “Why My Vote Matters.” Students were asked to give a 3- to 5-minute audio essay on the topic.
Trevor Moritch, a Pinedale High School, won the competition and a $250 award. Katelyn Hayward, also a Pinedale High School student, placed second and won $100.
Moritch will advance to the district competition representing Post 4801 in Sublette County and try for an opportunity to advance to state competition.
If he advances at the district level and is named first-place winner in the state of Wyoming he will then move on to national competition, which is March 2 to March 6 in Washington, D.C., with all travel expenses paid. Those competing at nationals have an opportunity to win a $30,000 scholarship.
Pinedale High School’s Rose Robertson has provided ongoing support for the program and this year’s judges were Kris Searles, Kendall Brunette, Marti Siepp and Carley Anderson.
